Moda Blockheads - Block #26

Cat's Cradle by Betsy Chutchian
To download the pattern for her block
go to her blog by clicking here.

Last week I answered this week's question and in the process found out the answer to my often wondered Freezer Paper question.
Our wonderful David sent a picture in a page from one of Elly Sienkiewiecz's books that cleared it up.  A lady named Anne Oliver from the Washington D.C. area discovered somehow that if you ironed Freezer Paper to cloth it stuck and she shared her knowledge.
We all owe her a big hug and "Thank You".
And a big "thank you" to David for letting me know about her.

OK - now I'll answer last week's question about setting.

Here's a drawing of what my quilt will look like - mostly.
I just counted the blocks and there are 49 instead of 48.
Soooo I'll take one block out of the top row and make the
star strip 6" longer and add another star.
I'm not sure what color the sashing and borders will be but the center will be tan.  I think maybe the tan hearts print from Fern Hill.

I'd have a better picture for you but we won't even go into what's been going on with my computer.
Right now my I-Mac (after a huge lightening strike that knocked out the surge protector) is having issues.   It's been to the Apple Store and then to a person to recover all of my data.   Right now it won't hook up to the internet so I had to print this out and take a picture and post from my MacBook.

So I'll give you the links to the other designers and you can see what they're doing.

Moda Blockheads - Block 25

Friendship Star by Lynn of Kansas Troubles

To get the pattern for her block
go to her blog by clicking here.

I just love star blocks, don't you.

Lets see, the question for today is

"In the 20 years you've been making quilts,
what is the product invention that makes you happiest?"

No doubt about it - Freezer Paper.
It makes the whole appliqué process so much easier and is great for piecing too.

And I really have been designing and making quilts for over 20 years.  My first fabric line with Moda came out in 1996 and it takes a good year to go through the process so I probably started in in l995.
When I first started making quilts - back when the dinosaurs roamed, as my grandchildren say - we cut templates out of manila folders.  We then found templastic which was a lot easier to see through and finally freezer paper.  I still want to know which brilliant woman figured out that if you iron it to fabric it will stick.  In all probability it was the wife or mother of a farmer or a hunter.

Since Freezer Paper Appliqué is what I do, I just happen to have filmed a
tutorial on my method which you can watch by clicking here.

And now lets to go the other designer's blogs to see their blocks and their favorite products.

Moda Blockheads Block #24 - Corn, No Beans by Carrie Nelson

WooHoo - We're halfway there :)

To go to Moda's website to download her pattern

This is a great addition to the blocks, Carrie.
Maybe we should have called this the "Moda Tiny Triangles Challenge"
I love, love, love the way they look and they make me very
glad that I mainly do appliqué.
And I really really like the way the 6" appliqué blocks
and the 6" pieced blocks look together

Moving on to blocks done with a Charm Bundle
instead of teeny, tiny triangles

This is Pumpkins and Pinwheels.
It's on sale this week for 15% off.

You can go to my website to get it by clicking here.

I almost forgot about answering the question.
Yes, I have decided on a setting.
There will be an 18" center applique block, 6 " blocks, some 2" sashing, more blocks, a strip with stars, more blocks.
I can't wait to get started on it but I need to leave the blocks free for photography.

Now lets go see what the other ladies did with Carrie's triangles

Moda Blockheads - Block #22

I finally have a name of my latest Wallhanging/Throw kit.
This is Autumn Glory named by Lyn.
Lyn, if you will email us at janpatekquilts@centurylink.net
and give us your snail mail information, etc. we will get a kit out to you.

There were lots of great names and if I use any of the others for a pattern, I'll send you a free pattern.

If you didn't win, you can still purchase a kit by clicking here.

And I know you all are really ready for your 6" block
so click here for the pattern.
It probably says "Block #4" but it's really Block 22 - It's just my 4th block.

I've decided to do a picture tutorial on all of my blocks.
Since I had all my blocks done before we started that means making another one.
Sooooo - I figured I might as well
quilt it and put it on a hanger.
One for the bigger quilt and one for the wall.  :)

We start out as usual drawing the patterns on Freezer Paper, cutting them out and ironing the paper to our fabric.  Then cut out of fabric with about a 1/4" seam allowance.

Baste under both sides of the pole for the stand but not the ends.
The top end with go under the stand and the bottom end is in the seam allowance.

Then baste under the stand.

Cut your 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" background piece,
fold it into and finger press it to mark the center.

Fold the pole piece in two and sew it in place.

Sew the stand in place and baste under the sides and bottom of the house.
Set the roof in place so you can position the holes correctly.

Cut out the freezer paper hole and then cut the fabric about 1/4" to 3/8" larger.

Do a running stitch around the outside of the fabric.
The paper will probably come off which is fine
because it will go on the inside anyway.

Place the paper circle inside,

pull your thread tight and do a stay stitch.

Now sew the holes in place.

Clip the inside of the curve on the roof in 3 places.
1 clip makes a point, 3 clips make a curve.

The inside curve on the roof and the bird as well as the points on the bird and wing are covered best in my filmed tutorial which you can watch by clicking here.
I would really suggest watching it, especially if you're somewhat new to appliqué.

Applique the wing to the bird and embroider it's eye using 2 strands of cotton floss.
Baste under the bottom of the bird so you can be sure where it sits on the roof.
Then applique in place.

Since I was going to be hand quilting my little block,
I cut the back out behind the house and the bird.

I put my back in my hoop, laid a piece of batting in place
and pinned the block to both.
Then I stretched it and quilted it.

I cut my binding strip at 2" instead of 2 1/2"

and sewed a little sleeve on the back.

I like it so much I decided to share.
So make a comment, any old comment, and I'll have the random number generator pick a number next Tuesday night and send the winner a little kit, including the hanger.  I'll announce the winner next Wednesday with Block #23.

I had so much fun with it that I think I'll back up and make a little Mini Quilt for the 1st 3.  I won't do a full tutorial on them but will just post the finished one when I post one of the pieced blocks so be watching my blog for a chance to win a kit.
Now to find little hangers that go with the blocks.  :):):)

Lets go see what the other ladies did with my little birdhouse.
